Fighting for the Right to Vote

Figures of Note

  • Lucretia Mott (1793-1880) - Co-organized the Seneca Falls Convention, the first women's rights convention
  • Sojourner Truth (1797-1883) - Gave a speech to the American Equal Rights Association in 1867 that in part focused on women's right to vote
  • Elizabeth Cady Stanton (1815-1902) - Co-organized the Seneca Falls Convention, the first women's rights convention
  • Frederick Douglass (1818-1895) - supported Elizabeth Cady Stanton with her Declaration of Sentiments
  • Susan B. Anthony (1820-1906) - Presented to Congress in 1878 an amendment giving women the right to vote
  • Mary Ann Shadd Cary (1823-1893) - First African-American Women to vote in a national election
  • Frances Ellen Watkins Harper (1825-1911) - co-founder of the National Association of Colored Women
  • Elizabeth Piper Ensley (1847-1919) - helped put women's suffrage amendment on the November 1893 ballot in Colorado
  • Carrie Chapman Catt (1859 - 1947) - founder of the Leader of Women Voters and the International Alliance of Women
  • Max Forrester Eastman (1883–1969) - helped found the Men's League for Women's Suffrage in the United States.
  • Alice Paul (1885 - 1977) - Main leader in campaign for 19th Amendment and helped add provisions for women to the 1964 Civil Rights Act
  • Ida B. Wells-Barnett (1862-1931) - Black suffragist who protested against racism, violence, and lynching
  • Mary Church Terrell (1863 -1954) - Fought for Black women's suffrage rights

Anti-Suffragists

  • Josephine Jewell Dodge (1855-1928) - found the National Association Opposed to Woman Suffrage
  • Ida Minerva Tarbell (1857-1944) - investigative journalist critical of the women's suffrage movement
  • Minnie Bronson - Anti-suffragist activist, general secretary of the National Association Opposed to Woman Suffrage
  • Mrs. Albert T. Leatherbee - Wrote Anti-Suffrage campaign manual
  • Mrs. William Force Scott - argued that "an inherent right to vote" doesn't exist
