The Strong and Lehman Collections

Hattie Marie Strong (1864-1950): philanthropist.  Hattie Strong built and lived in Strong Dormitory on the campus of Salem College.  She also built the Corrin Refectory.  She established the Hattie M. Strong Foundation in 1928, and gifts of various buildings to hospitals, educational institutions and social service agencies in the United States, Europe, Asia and Africa. The records of the Hattie Marie Strong Collection include correspondences, diaries, writings, and accolades including medals, photographs, newspaper clippings, scrapbooks, printed material, and an autobiography.  

Emma Augusta Lehman (1841-1922): teacher, poet and naturalist, was born at Bethania, North Carolina. Her Moravian parents enrolled her in Salem Female Academy at age thirteen; she graduated in three years at sixteen.  In 1864, she became a member of the faculty at Salem Female Academy, where she remained for fifty-two years. The records of Emma Augusta Lehman includes her personal herbarium, correspondences, notebooks, travel journals, scrapbooks, publications, and writings.
